Professor (all ranks) in Mechanics of Materials and Structures

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University invites outstanding applicants for a tenured or tenure-track position in the general area of mechanics of materials. Areas of interest include experimental, theoretical, and/or computational investigations of the mechanics of polymers, ceramics, metals, composites, and biomaterials. Specific research thrusts of interest include but are not limited to architectured materials, behavior of materials under extreme environments, and biomechanics. The originality and potential impact of the candidate’s work are of higher priority than the specific area of research.

We seek applicants who may leverage across University initiatives and centers in promoting interdisciplinary teaching and research. These investments include, among others, the Global Institute of Sustainability (https://sustainability.asu.edu/), LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Science (https://le-csss.asu.edu/), Additive Manufacturing Center (https://additive-manufacturing.engineering.asu.edu/), 4D Materials Science Center (https://4dms.engineering.asu.edu/), and the Biodesign Institute (https://biodesign.asu.edu/), along with academic programs across the University. The current openings are intended to broaden our expertise and expand collaborations.

Appointments will be made at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2019. The appointment will be in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering or Chemical Engineering programs within the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy.

Faculty members are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and undertake service activities within the university, in the professional community, and at the national level.

Required qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and/or a field related to the stated research and teaching focus of this position, by the time of appointment
• Demonstrated evidence of research capability
• Evidence of teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank

• Commitment to a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching
