ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Faculty Position in Chemical Engineering
University of Massachusetts Amherst

Assistant Professor- The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level. Preferred areas of research may be experimental or theoretical in nature and would complement existing strengths in polymer science, soft materials, and bioengineering. The department is hiring multiple faculty in biomaterials/polymer science and in cancer bioengineering by interfacing with the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) at UMass. These two hires will leverage UMass strengths in polymers, soft materials, cell biology, immunology, and epidemiology. The hires may advance basic research or translational applications, especially in delivery systems and models of the tumor microenvironment for identification of new therapeutic targets. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in polymer science and biomaterials, integrating materials with devices to study cell-material interactions important to cancer, experience with in vivo systems, and patient-derived cultures. Under exceptional circumstances, senior candidates will be considered.
Job Duties: Faculty members are expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contribute significantly to the advancement of basic science and engineering as evidenced by scholarly publications, and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research. The successful applicant will hold a position in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering has 20 full-time faculty members, over 60 graduate students, and over 425 undergraduates. Research expenditures exceeded $6.5M in the last fiscal year. The Department has a long history of successful interdisciplinary research. The new hire will collaborate with IALS faculty to translate research results into therapeutic goals, interact with industry scientists, and provide essential training for the next generation of biomedical scientists. IALS and the UMass Amherst campus are committed to the development of translational and basic research programs while fostering interactions with industry. The new hire will also be able to take full advantage of the new IALS investments in enhanced campus infrastructure and core facilities (see http://www.umass.edu/ials/core-facilities for more details).
Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related field, outstanding record of research accomplishments, and commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
Starting Date: Expected starting date is September 1, 2017.
