POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
FOCUS: BIOMEDICAL DEVICES
POSITION: The College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level with strong preference for candidates with a biomedical focus and with interests in fundamental and applied research that enables the development of advanced biomedical devices and/or other translational techniques. The College seeks to extend its impact as part of University-wide and Commonwealth of Massachusetts initiatives in the Applied Life Sciences that have provided modern laboratory facilities and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Baystate Medical Center and several Research Institutes and Centers on campus. In particular, the UMass Amherst Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) houses three new translational science Centers focused on Personalized Health Monitoring, Models to Medicines, and Bioactive Delivery. The Centers aim at advancing world class research on the campus towards developing new products to improve human health and spurring economic growth in Western Massachusetts. Key funding for the Centers include a $95 million capital grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) and a $5.5 million grant to the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute, which is jointly owned by UMass and Baystate Health.
STARTING DATE: September 1, 2016
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related field, outstanding record of research accomplishments, and commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
RESPONSIBILITES: Faculty members are expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contribute significantly to the advancement of basic science and engineering as evidenced by scholarly publications, and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research.
Department, School, Institute, University and Community: The University of Massachusetts Amherst (http://www.umass.edu), the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, is a nationally ranked public research university and home to over 22,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students. The 1,430 acre campus is located in the scenic Pioneer valley of western Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. UMass Amherst, along with Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, is a member of the Five College Consortium and the Academic Career network. The region boasts a rural setting with easy access to Boston, Hartford, and New York City. Amherst is nestled between the Berkshire Mountains, Holyoke Range and Pelham Hills providing many recreational opportunities.
