The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB) seeks to hire multiple faculty members at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor rank. Candidates with research interests in all areas of bioengineering or materials science and nanotechnology, as well as the interface between these areas, are of interest. Examples of areas of particular interest in bioengineering include but are not limited to systems bioengineering, synthetic biology, cell/molecular bioengineering, and stem cell and tissue engineering. Candidates conducting experimental or computational research in the structure, properties, production and design of engineered materials for energy- or health-related applications are also of interest. Exceptional candidates in other research areas will also be considered. Ideal candidates will complement existing research strengths in the department (http://www.cbe.buffalo.edu) and the university’s broader UB2020 Strategic Initiatives (http://www.buffalo.edu/ub2020).

Applicants should submit a curriculum vita, statements of teaching and research plans, and names of at least three references via the UBJobs system (http://www.ubjobs.buffalo.edu, reference posting number 1300721). Review of applications will begin January 1, 2014 and will continue until the positions are filled.

CBE@UB combines excellence and collegiality to provide an outstanding environment for our faculty, staff, and students. In the 2010 NRC assessment of doctoral programs, CBE@UB placed in the top 10 nationally in the categories of publications per faculty member and awards per faculty member. Particular areas of research strength and focus in the department include bioengineering, nanomaterials engineering, and molecular and multiscale modeling. At present, we have 18 faculty members with $300K of annual research expenditures per faculty, 130 graduate, and over 300 undergraduate students. Our faculty includes 3 members of the National Academy of Engineering and 7 NSF CAREER Award recipients. We anticipate continuous growth over the next five years, with the department expanding to at least 22 faculty members. This 30% increase in our faculty size is supported by university-wide strategic plans for growth in energy research, nanotechnology, materials research, bioengineering, and related areas where CBE plays a key role.

Along with a strong core of bioengineering and materials science and engineering faculty in CBE and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, UB offers rich collaborative opportunities in the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Arts and Sciences; the Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences; Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute; Roswell Park Cancer Institute; the new Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics; and the new Materials Science and Engineering graduate program.

The University at Buffalo is the largest and most comprehensive university in The State University of New York (SUNY) system, with about 19,000 undergraduates, 10,000 graduate students, and 1600 full-time faculty (which is expected to grow by 300 faculty over the next five years). Buffalo is located in New York State’s second-largest metropolitan area, known for its friendly residents, world-class cultural institutions, and international flavor. CBE@UB is located on the UB North Campus in suburban Amherst, an area that combines outstanding public schools and services with a surprisingly low cost-of-living. Downtown Buffalo, with eclectic neighborhoods, the Lake Erie waterfront, and vast cultural resources, is 15 minutes away by car. The awe-inspiring Niagara Falls is also just 20 minutes away.

The University at Buffalo is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer/Recruiter.
