Assistant / Associate / Full Professor- The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position open to all ranks. Preferred areas of research may be experimental or theoretical in nature and would complement existing strengths in materials science, polymers, soft matter / complex fluids, and devices. The Chemical Engineering department is looking to build on its strength in materials science and partner with the Institute of Applied Life Sciences to hire faculty at the interface of materials and wearable devices. Wearable devices and technologies have caused much excitement in the industry; however breakthroughs in manufacturing flexible, non-intrusive and small-scale devices and features in a cost effective manner are needed. In particular, device fabrication at the required scales and rates requires in-depth understanding and control of material coating and placement â€“ both of which are heavily influenced by material rheological and interfacial properties. Therefore, we are seeking a highly motivated, Chemical Engineering faculty member to conduct collaborative research related to thin film coating processes. We are particularly interested in faculty with expertise in thin film deposition and rheology applicable to roll-to-roll manufacturing for sensors and medical devices expertise in fluid, polymer and colloid / dispersion and interfacial rheology, and for faculty motivated in collaborative efforts to apply research findings to device fabrication and development.
Job Duties: Faculty members are expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contribute significantly to the advancement of basic science and engineering as evidenced by scholarly publications, and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research. The successful applicant will hold a position in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering has 20 full-time faculty members, over 60 graduate students, and over 425 undergraduates. Research expenditures exceeded $6.5M in the last fiscal year. The Department has a long history of successful interdisciplinary research. The new hire will collaborate with IALS faculty to translate research results into therapeutic goals, interact with industry scientists, and provide essential training for the next generation of biomedical scientists. IALS and the UMass Amherst campus are committed to the development of translational and basic research programs while fostering interactions with industry. The new hire will also be able to take full advantage of the new IALS investments in enhanced campus infrastructure and core facilities (see http://www.umass.edu/ials/core-facilities for more details).
Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related field, outstanding record of research accomplishments, and commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
Starting Date: Expected starting date is September 1, 2017.
